CEO Wehner Announces OSHA Training Held in Hudson Valley

April 21, 2006

New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF) Executive Director David P. Wehner announced NYSIF is conducting a free 10-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training course in Kingston today in conjunction with the Safety and Health Council of the Hudson Valley.

“I’m pleased our staff could provide this valuable service to businesses in the Hudson Valley,” Mr. Wehner said.“ While workplace safety is an essential component of keeping workers’ compensation costs down, it is more critical that we protect our state’s working men and women.”

Safety and Health Council of the Hudson Valley President & Founder Ron Coons commented: “When envisioning the idea of a council back in 2004, my main goal was to bring area businesses together to network and share best practices, while at the same time, offering them complimentary quality education in the key areas of safety and health. NYSIF has played a vital part in the success of the Council; it is because of the Fund’s professional and passionate consultants that our membership has grown to more than 200 members.”

Four of NYSIF’s authorized OSHA outreach trainers, who also have New York State Certified Safety Consultant (CSC) designations, will teach the two-day course acquainting participants with federal OSHA standards and answering questions about OSHA procedures. Designed for owners, supervisors, production workers, or safety committee members, 50 people plan to attend the course at the Business Resource Center on April 21 and April 28.

Tom McCarthy, a Compliance Assistance Specialist from OSHA Region 2, will kick off the training with an introduction to federal regulations under OSHA.

Covered topics include: Introduction to OSHA, Walking and Working Surfaces, Exit Routes, Emergency Action Plans and Fire Prevention, Electrical, Personal Protective Equipment, Machine Guarding, Hazard Communications, and Flammable and Combustible Liquids.

NYSIF is committed to a healthy and accident-free work environment for each of its policyholders and their employees. Such an environment can reduce workers' compensation and its related indirect costs, maintain productivity and increase employee morale. The Fund can assist policyholders in implementing a workplace safety program.

NYSIF is a non-profit agency of the State of New York that was created as part of the Workers' Compensation Law of 1914. By law, NYSIF is a competitive insurance carrier that sells workers' compensation and disability benefits insurance to any employer doing business in New York State. Approximately 195,000 employers hold NYSIF workers' compensation insurance policies, constituting about 37 percent of the market.
