Workers' compensation insurance protects employers from liability for on-the-job injuries resulting in employee disability or death, providing injured workers with monetary relief and medical benefits, or, in the case of death, survivor benefits to their dependents.

Volunteer firefighters benefits insurance


NYSIF began to issue Volunteer Firefighters’ Benefits Insurance when the NYS Volunteer Firefighters’ Benefits Law took effect on January 1, 1957. 

NYSIF charges a flat premium for this coverage based on the population of the territory served by the volunteer fire companies covered under the policy. Employers' liability insurance may be extended to volunteer fire departments and their fire chiefs, commissioners and trustees at an additional 10% of the policy premium.

Paid employees of a volunteer fire company, such as bookkeepers, drivers, maintenance people and firehouse porters, must be covered under a standard workers’ compensation policy.

Volunteer ambulance workers’ benefits insurance


NYSIF began to issue Volunteer Ambulance Workers Benefits Insurance when the NYS Volunteer Ambulance Workers' Benefits Law took effect on January 1, 1989.

NYSIF charges a flat premium for this coverage based on the number of primary ambulances, emergency service/first response vehicles and back-up ambulances covered under the policy. Employers' liability insurance may be extended to volunteer ambulance companies and their officers and board of trustees at an additional 10% of the policy premium.

Paid employees of a volunteer ambulance company, such as a bookkeeper, drivers and a maintenance person, must be covered under a standard workers’ compensation policy.
