NYSIF Deputy Director Gleason Presented With NYCA Award of Excellence

New York Claim Association Honors Gleason for Service to the Insurance Industry

The New York State Insurance Fund today announced that NYSIF Deputy Executive Director Thomas Gleason was honored Saturday, December 12, by the New York Claim Association (NYCA) at their annual dinner. Chosen unanimously by the NYCA executive officers and board of directors, Mr. Gleason was presented with NYCA’s 2009 Award of Excellence in recognition of excellence in service to the insurance industry.

More than 235 people attended the celebration at the Harvard Club in Manhattan, including several past presidents, board members and claims experts representing insurers, TPAs, risk managers and medical providers.

“I am privileged to be chosen for this prestigious award,” Mr. Gleason said. “My association with NYCA goes back more than 30 years, and I am proud of the work we have accomplished in that time. The Claim Association has earned the enormous respect of the workers’ compensation industry; it is an honor to represent both NYSIF and NYCA.”

New York State Insurance Fund Chief Deputy Executive Director Francine James said: “We are very proud of Tom. All of us at NYSIF appreciate his knowledge, leadership and his efforts to make the insurance industry better. The Claim Association has chosen a very deserving recipient for the Award of Excellence.”   

Like NYSIF, NYCA is celebrating its 95th year of service. Established in 1914, NYCA is dedicated to the advancement of education and ethics in the field of New York claims management, with a concentration in the areas of workers' compensation and no fault insurance. Membership consists of insurance carriers, attorneys, self-insureds, third-party administrators, risk managers and health care providers. 

NYCA President Annette Malpica said: "NYCA is pleased to honor and recognize Thomas Gleason at our Annual Holiday Gala. Mr. Gleason's illustrious career in the field of workers' compensation spans over 30 years in both public and private practice. He brings a wealth of knowledge and energy to his work at the State Insurance Fund and the workers' compensation industry in New York. We congratulate Mr. Gleason on his accomplishments and join the other organizations that have recognized his accomplishments."  

The mission of the NYCA is to promote high standards of ethics and professional conduct among its members and others engaged in insurance claim and related businesses; to provide educational programs to keep members informed; to support a high level of professional standards in the delivery of services provided by its members; and to foster and advance the interests of its members in such fashion that their united efforts will result in tangible improvements insuring to their common good, betterment and welfare. 

NYSIF, created as part of the Workers' Compensation Law of 1914, is New York’s largest workers’ compensation insurance carrier. By law, NYSIF is a competitive insurance carrier that sells workers' compensation and disability benefits insurance to any employer doing business in New York State. Approximately 180,000 employers hold NYSIF workers' compensation insurance policies, constituting about 41 percent of the market, while 61,000 employers maintain active disability benefits policies.
