NYSIF Combats Child Labor

GroceryGirl

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938 included provisions to ensure that when young people work, the work is safe. "Child labor" is any work carried out by minors under the age of 18 that jeopardizes their health, well-being or educational opportunities.

Join us in the effort to protect New York’s youth! NYSIF's PROTECT campaign provides essential resources to educate our policyholders, suppliers, contractors and employees so they may take an active role in preventing the use of child labor.

After a significant increase in the number of reports of child labor violations in New York State, Governor Kathy Hochul tasked the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) with strengthening its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of youth workers. NYSIF commends the Governor's leadership in this effort.

NYSIF supports the safe and legal employment of minors. Youth all over New York State work in parks, grocery stores, camps, restaurants and more to gain skills and knowledge that become critical as they build careers.

The rules and regulations of hiring minors are clear: the hours a minor can work depends on the type of work and whether they’re attending school. See our resources below for more information.
