DOH: Give Truckers a Break

Truck drivers on the road for more than eight hours are at greater risk of a fatigue-related crash than those who take regular breaks. The New York State Department of Health (DOH) lists these warning signs of drowsy driving:

  • Drifting from lanes, hitting rumble strips
  • Wandering, disconnected thoughts
  • Yawning repeatedly
  • Difficulty keeping eyes open, head bobbing
  • Jerking vehicle back in to the lane

Per DOH, drivers who experience any of these signs should pull over for a nap of at least 20 minutes and a caffeinated beverage before returning to the road.

See www.dot.ny.gov for hours-of-service rules.
