
Samim Ghamami, Chief Economist: Samim joined NYSIF in fall 2025, overseeing and leading economics, investment, and markets research.
Prior to joining NYSIF, Ghamami worked at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission with the SEC Chair and leadership team as a senior economist on the reform of the U.S. Treasury market and other capital market initiatives. He is a recipient of the SEC Chair’s Award for Excellence due to his work on Treasury market reforms.
Prior to the SEC, Ghamami worked as a senior economist, strategist, and director of economic research at Millennium Management, Goldman Sachs, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve Board, and Barclays. Ghamami is a member of the Economic Club of New York and the Bretton Woods Committee and has been an adjunct professor of finance and economics at New York University, UC Berkeley, and Columbia University.
Ghamami’s work has broadly focused on the interplay of macroeconomics and finance. His publications have appeared in top academic and practitioner journals, and his work has been featured on CNBC and at the Financial Times. Additionally, his work has been discussed at advanced economy central banks and international financial institutions. He has served as an advisor to the Bank for International Settlements and the Financial Stability Board on post-global- financial crisis reforms.
Ghamami received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Finance and Operations Research from the University of Southern California in 2009. He holds a Master of Science from the University of Tehran and a Bachelor of Science from the Iran University of Science and Technology in Operations Research.
