
Joseph Canovas, of Richmond County, is Assistant to the President and Special Counsel to the New York State AFL-CIO.
The New York State AFL-CIO is a statewide federation of 3,000 unions that represent 2.5 million workers and retirees, and their families. Joe coordinates the organization’s operations, lobbies the executive and legislative branches of New York State government, provides legal and strategic advice and guidance, and oversees the organization’s appellate advocacy.
Joe represents workers on the Board of Governors of the New York Compensation Insurance Rating Board, and the New York Black Car Operators’ Injury Compensation Fund Board of Directors. He previously served on several New York State Workers’ Compensation Board advisory committees.
He earned his JD and BA from St. John’s University and is admitted to practice law in New York and Connecticut.
